Photographic files, 1920-1969.

Accession contains the photgraphic files from the Department of Sanitation, the bulk of which are from the early 1920's through the 1960's. The creating department retains the files from the 1970's to the present. The files include 4x5 negatives, 8x10 film and glass plate negatives, and some prints from the various sizes. The majority of material are 4x5 negatives, falling within the 1930's to 1940's. About 20% of the collection are prints. The images illustrate the many activities of the Department of Sanitation: collection trucks, snow removal, land fills, rat holes, accidents involving sanitation vehicles, NYU parades (Lindberg, Corrigan, Eisenhower, V.E. and V.J. Day, St. Patrick's Day, and many others), the 1937 World's Fair and other subjects. There is an early 4x5 glass plate negative from 1909 depicting a two horse sprinkler with a broom convoy, some 1940's Bond Drives with Mayor LaGuardia and varied treasures, for example, a print of a 1899 parade scene, no negative.
